Year 1 Primary Care

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Year 1 Primary Care Residency Program accredited?

As our program is new, it is pending accreditation from the Canadian Pharmacy Residency Board. We anticipate to have our first graduate(s) in summer 2026 and to have an accreditation survey in fall/winter 2026.

Program accreditation is retroactive to prior program graduates and all successful graduates may use the Accredited Canadian Pharmacy Residency (ACPR) designation.

Will graduates of the Year 1 Primary Care Residency Program only be able to work in primary care or ambulatory care settings?

No. Although Primary Care residents will complete the majority of their training in primary care and ambulatory care settings, the Year 1 Primary Care Residency Program is still a general residency program designed to meet all standards established by the Canadian Pharmacy Residency Board. The primary focus of the Program is to build residents’ comprehensive pharmaceutical care and practice management skills, which graduates can use in any setting to practice effectively.

What is the employment arrangement upon acceptance to the Year 1 Primary Care Residency Program?

Residents are LMPS employees and will receive a stipend and benefits package. The terms of this package is identical to that received by LMPS Year 1 Institutional residents.

Estimated Stipend:  P1 salary less 15.2% (Wage Schedule N (Pharmacist) as per the HSPBA Collective Agreement and Pharmacy Resident Transition Agreement). Approximately $88,000 for the 54-week employment term.

Benefits Included: Extended health benefits (including medical and dental) as per the HSPBA Collective Agreement.

Vacation: The full employment term will be 54 weeks, which includes 4 weeks of vacation. Vacation shall be scheduled at the discretion of the Employer, with consideration of the scheduled rotations and requirements of the Residency Program, resident educational development, and requests from the resident.

Is there a return-of-service agreement?

LMPS is pleased to offer a return-of-service agreement, the terms of which are identical to that offered by the LMPS Year 1 Institutional Residency program. The full details are described in the Pharmacy Resident Transition Agreement.

Residents who agree to provide a return of service will complete this obligation by working within a regular clinical pharmacist position within LMPS for 12 months after completion of the program. Residents who decline to provide a return of service or who partially complete the return of service must repay a portion of their total wages paid during the residency program.

Signing the return-of-service agreement is entirely voluntary. Residents can choose to accept the offer of residency training without committing to the return of employment. Whether a resident accepts or declines the return-of-service agreement will not influence their residency training or graduation in any way.

The return-of-service agreement applies to positions that are offered across LMPS. As such, residents do not need to choose a position specifically within primary or ambulatory care in LMPS to fulfil the terms of the contract, nor can a position within primary or ambulatory care be guaranteed to be available.
